The Staircase is a sculptural shelving unit, wallpapered in a pattern of my own design, that plays on the various literary and cinematic clichés of a mysterious or foreboding door beneath the stairs of an otherwise domestic and safe space. Each stair staircase presents a piece of what I refer to an original sheet of printed “stationary” on a “pad holder”. For a while, I have been documenting temporary construction projects inside the various metro stop of Montreal’s STM system. I have been particularly intrigued with the strange temporary doors or barricades that are hastily constructed inthe halls of the STM system. The images on the “pad holders” each depict one of these barricades from Montreal’s subway system.

The small sculptural curios placed on each step coexist with sketches, found images and flat planes in real and abstract space, creating a tension between the physical and the immaterial dimension of imaginary narrative.
